Summer Camps

Summer 2018 features camps for a wide range of interests – click on each one below for more information! Most camps are designed for ages 6+ and will be held from 10am – 3pm each day. Questions? Email amanda@thenovelneighbor.com.

Description: Using our local playground, Lockwood Park, as a creative resource, campers will work with a variety of natural materials in order to create colorful weavings, intricate rock mandalas, fairy houses, pinecone gnomes and elves, and many other naturally creative projects for those that love art and the outdoors. Ages 6+

Instructor: This camp will be led by Sarah Hassing, the studio art teacher and Early Childhood Coordinator for The College School. Sarah is a graduate of The Evergreen State College and a MAE student at Webster University.

AroundTheWorld (1)

Description: Take a wild trip around the world – without the jetlag! Kids will learn about different global cultures – touching on history, art, music, and more! Ages 7+

Instructor: Moira Smith is an MFA student at Webster and accomplished artist. She has led camps and classes for The Novel Neighbor for several years and is a favorite with our littlest customers!

Description: Art! Art! Art! From drawing to painting, from sculpture to collage – this camp will cover it all! Kids will be amazed at what they can create and bring home!

Description: This week long camp is all about sculpting! Campers will work with traditional and air-dry clay to create hand-built masterpieces that will be kiln fired and colorfully painted. Campers will make their own play-dough and slime to continue fun and creative explorations into three-dimensional sculpting mediums. Ages 6+

Instructor: This camp will be led by Sarah Hassing, the studio art teacher and Early Childhood Coordinator for The College School. Sarah is a graduate of The Evergreen State College and a MAE student at Webster University.

HarryPotter_FB

Description: Welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! First Years, this way! This camp is perfect for Harry Potter fans, whether you’re new to the series or know them all by heart! As first year students, all young wizards will gather supplies in Diagon Alley, try on the Sorting Hat to find their houses, participate in classes to earn points for their teams, and play Quidditch. Throughout the week we will make crafts and play games inspired by the Harry Potter books, and on Friday the House Cup will be awarded to the house with the most points. Ages 6+

Instructor: This camp will be led by our Children’s Event Coordinator, Karen Rasure. Karen leads our popular birthday party program and has ran our popular Harry Potter Camp for several years!

Description: This camp is for the little scientists! Each day will cover topics such as earth sciences, weather prediction, ecology and pollution, and the forces of nature. Through a wide variety of hands on activities and excursions to Lockwood Park’s restored prairie, kids will learn all about tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, and floods – as well as touching on climate change and how we can help! Ages 7+

Instructor: This camp will be led by Patrick Hurley, a high-energy and hilarious fifth grade teacher from the Francis Howell School District. Patrick has experience teaching grades K-5, as well as special education, music, and theater.

Little House on The Prairie_FB

Description: Hitch up the wagons and let’s go! Discover the excitement of pioneer days as we discuss and learn about life on the American frontier through the experiences of Laura Ingalls Wilder. We’ll make crafts, like cornhusk dolls, clove apples, and button necklaces; we’ll churn butter and picnic on the prairie. We’ll play games like Kick the Can or Hide the Thimble. Come have fun while learning about an exciting part of American history! Ages 7+

Instructor: This camp will be led by Jenny Ingram, an English teacher from Lafayette High School, whose passion for reading started with the Laura Ingalls Wilder books.

History Mysteries _FB (2)

Description: Do you love mysteries, the unexplained, or solving puzzles? Kids will enjoy inquiry and project based learning about various mysteries and conspiracies throughout history. This will include topics such as the Lost Colony of Roanoke, Amelia Earhart, Area 51, Roswell and disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle. Ages 7+

Instructor: This camp will be led by Megan Bledsoe, an experienced elementary education teacher, with experience teaching grades K-5.
