This summer, the Novel Neighbor’s got an amazing lineup of camps for kids! Campers have the opportunity to enter the magical worlds of fairy tales and Harry Potter, and more. Or they can learn interesting skills like bookmaking, sewing, sculpture, and how to make butter! 

The Art of Book Making Summer Camp at the Novel Neighbor

The Art of Bookmaking

What better place than a bookstore to learn the art of making books?  Campers will explore introductory methods of book folding and binding, learn how to make a book box (for multiple books) as well as make a pop-up book. If you are one to write your own stories at home, bring your drafts along to put your words to the (bound) pages!

Note: We will spend one hour for lunch in Lockwood Park.  Ages 8-12

Art in Nature Summer Camp at the Novel Neighbor

Finding Art in Nature

Using our local playground, Lockwood Park, as a creative resource, campers will work with a variety of natural materials in order to create colorful weavings, intricate rock mandalas, fairy houses, pinecone gnomes and elves, and many other naturally creative projects for those that love art and the outdoors. Ages 6-12

Fun with Fabric Summer Camp at the Novel Neighbor

Fun with Fabric (Half-Day)

This half-day camp will focus on textile and fabric art through many different avenues. Participants will have the chance to hand sew, weave, and dye fabric during this five day exploration into fiber arts. By the end of the week, all participants will have hand-made crafts to bring home! Ages 6-12

Join us as we turn The Novel Neighbor into an enormous art studio! We will draw and sketch, paint and sculpt as we find the beauty in using fine arts materials during this week of creativity.  Ages 6-12

Witchcraft and Wizardry Summer Camp at the Novel Neighbor

Witchcraft and Wizardry

Pack your bags and head for Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross Station! You are heading to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! Campers will learn all the skills they need to succeed in their OWLs: potions, spellcasting, care of magical creatures, and will even learn to play Quidditch. Watch out for the Whomping Willow! You never know when it might come to life! Ages 6-12

The Wizarding World of...Art!

Calling all Potterheads, young witches and wizards alike! If you are spellbound by the world of Harry Potter, enroll in our magical school to create books and other wizardy devices.  We will make everything from the Monster Book of Monsters (binding the book ourselves!) to the Marauders Map! Students will go through a sampling of Hogwarts classes and participate in projects relating to the subject. Sneak preview: for Potions we are making cyanotype images! Ages 8-12

Little Camp on the Boulevard Summer Camp at the Novel Neighbor

Little Camp on the Boulevard

Take a hike on over to the bookstore and find yourself transported back to the prairie! Campers will spend lots of time outside, at Lockwood Park (just up the street behind the College School) scavenging for natural materials to use in crafts.  Young pioneers will make natural dyes, sun print images (cyanotypes), bind their own guidebooks, make butter, and more! Ages 8-12

A Seriously Unfortunate Camp

In this camp, we will go through the first three books of A Series of Unfortunate Events. In the Bad Beginning, campers will create various art objects that could help in tricky situations.  We will work with what we’ve got and like it! Going on, campers will engage with wacky DIY characters and creatures alike, coming away with whoknowswhat. Evidence nonetheless. Ages 8-12

Journey to Hogwarts

We’re going back to Hogwarts! This camp is perfect for Harry Potter fans, whether you’re new to the series or know them all by heart! As first-year students, all young wizards will gather supplies in Diagon Alley, try on the Sorting Hat to find their houses, participate in classes to earn points for their teams, and play Quidditch. Throughout the week we will make crafts and play games inspired by the Harry Potter books, and on Friday the House Cup will be awarded to the house with the most points. Ages 7-12

This is a great camp for kids who love dreaming about kings and queens, knights and dragons and want to be immersed in fantasy! We will enjoy classic and retold stories, create crafts like castles and wands, play outdoor games based on famous tales and much more. Ages 5-9

Join us as we travel to the realm of forest magic for this week’s camp. All participants will spend the week joyfully crafting gnomes, fairies, and their furry friends, as well as imaginative homes and buildings using a variety of interesting materials. Our adventures will include sewing, building, painting, drawing, sculpting, and so much more. Ages 6-12

This camp will focus solely on three-dimensional construction and crafts. From sculpting with clay to building with natural materials, wood, and cardboard, Our aim is to find creativity and ingenuity through designing, constructing, and engineering. Ages 6-12

Megan Bledsoe 

Journey to Hogwarts, Fairy Tale Adventures

Megan currently teaches 4th grade reading and writing. She has experience in all elementary grades and has been teaching for 8 years. She has a master’s in Education and is a Hufflepuff!

 

Sarah Hassing

Finding Art in Nature, Fun With Fabric, A Week in the Studio, Fairy Houses, Garden Gnomes, and Art in 3-D

Sarah Hassing is the studio art teacher and Early Childhood Coordinator for The College School. Sarah is a graduate of The Evergreen State College and a MAE student at Webster University.

 

Jennifer Meehan

Witchcraft & Wizardry

Jennifer Meehan has more than 15 years of experience working with elementary school kids in a variety of venues: classes, camps, birthday parties. A die-hard fan of all things Harry Potter, Jennifer is thrilled to serve as “headmaster” for this fun and engaging week of camp.

 

Moira Smith

The Art of Bookmaking, The Wizarding World of…Art!, Little Camp on the Boulevard, and A Seriously Unfortunate Camp

Moira Smith has been the Creative Project Coordinator at the Novel Neighbor since fall 2015, and a summer camp instructor since summer 2016. She graduated from Webster University with a BFA in Photography and has worked as a local art handler for 6 years! Moira has programmed many book/art themed camps and loves sharing bookmaking knowledge with all the young writers and artists in town. Some of her favorite summer camps she’s ever programmed were: The Wonderful World of Roald Dahl, and Harry Potter Art camp.
