Author Event: Chigozie Obioma – “Orchestra of Minorities”
January 14, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
We are INCREDIBLY proud to be partnering with the STLCC’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion to bring this award-winning and internationally bestselling author to St. Louis!
Obioma’s debut, THE FISHERMEN, was a finalist for the Booker, won the 2016 LA Times Book Prize and NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work, in addition to a plethora of rave reviews and Best Book of the Year nods in dozens of outlets.
His new novel is a retelling of the Odyssey paired with a storyline based on a real, recurring scam many of his countrymen in Nigeria are victim to from their own–namely arranging and paying for a college education in Cyprus, only to arrive to find no money, no spot at university, and their life-savings drained.
From Nicole Dennis-Benn, award-winning author of Here Comes the Sun:
“Chigozie Obioma pens a deeply empathetic, complex, and gut-wrenchingly human narrative that captures the heart and soul. An Orchestra of Minorities stays with you. With remarkable style and compelling language, he explores what it means to experience blinding love and devastating loss. A truly gifted writer, Obioma has proven yet again, that he’s a literary treasure.”
And Brit Bennett, New York Times bestselling author of The Mothers:
“An ambitious and immersive tale about love and sacrifice, told by an ancient spirit. A bold new novel from an exciting young writer.”
