The Noble Neighbor

The Noble NeighborWe all remember the childhood joy of holding a book in our hands – how good it felt to imagine a world an author had created, how important it was to slow down and focus on absorbing a new discovery. Since The Novel Neighbor opened five years ago, we have been sparking countless experiences like this in young readers in-store and by bringing authors into area schools. But this only makes economic sense when authors visit schools where students can afford to buy books, and this is just … wrong. And so, the idea for the next chapter of our story began.

The Noble Neighbor’s sole purpose is organizing author visits and providing free books for children in under-served school districts. We believe that every child should experience the joy and benefit of meeting an author and reading their own book, regardless of their ability to pay.

Recognizing that this was a need, in 2018 we informally began seeking underwriting for authors like SCOTUS Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Girl Scouts CEO Sylvia Acevedo, Caldecott Medal Honoree Christian Robinson, and an all-day Title 1 school event during our OMG BookFest children’s book festival, where 1,000 students interacted with 23 authors and took home free books.

THE CRUCIAL LINK

Receiving a books to take home and read is the final crucial link in connecting the inspiration and author visit provides to real world literacy skills. – Melissa Posten, Children’s Literature Specialist

61% of low-income families have no books in their homes for their children.

BECOME A NOBLE NEIGHBOR

We invite you to become a part of The Noble Neighbor, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing free books and connecting children of all socioeconomic backgrounds to the authors they love.

It costs approximately $2,500 to schedule an author visit and provide each child with a free book. We hope you’ll join us in our mission to offer this incredible experience to students in districts that would otherwise be unable to afford it.

“Every author we have had visit our school has encouraged our kids to find their passion and to pursue it.  The authors bring their characters to life and provide insight on how to follow through from idea to finished book.”

– Ann Ratliff, Gotsch Intermediate School

MISSION STATEMENT

The Noble Neighbor brings books and authors to under-served St. Louis area schools to empower kids and promote equity in education – because children’s access to knowledge and inspiration should not be limited by their zip code.

Author event at school

“When children meet the author responsible for their favorite stories, they realize authors are human, too. This powerful experience demystifies the publishing process and helps children realize their own writing and stories matter just as much as the books sitting on their library shelves.”

– Author Christina Soontornvat
